Managing Channels

This topic describes how to create channels, view channel details, and delete channels.

Creating a Channel

To create a channel, see Setting Up a Channel.

Encoding Setup

During the Create New Channel process, on the General Setup page, setting Encoding Partner to Ooyala Encode, and clicking Next Step displays the Encoding Setup page. Otherwise, this page does not appear.

  • Encoder Location: Ooyala sets up capabilities in the system for your provider account. Each geographic region has an associated cost in your account. The defaults are set up in the dropdown lists.
  • Encoder Input Profile: Select whether to use one or two inputs where the secondary input provides failover content.

The default Elemental Input Profile w/ Failover (Non Ad) option requires two inputs: Input 1 takes your primary content. Input 2 takes your non-ad failover content. When the Input 1 stream is interrupted during a live event, the video output stream displays failover content from Input 2.

The elemental-live-input option requires only Input 1. When the Input 1 stream is interrupted during a live event, the video output stream displays no content.

  • Encoder Output Profile displays only one option at a time. On the preceeding General Setup page, if you set Packaging Partner to Ooyala Package, elemental-live-delta is the only option. If you set Packaging Partner to Ooyala Akamai, elemental-live-akamai is the only option. (If you set Packaging Partner to Custom, the Encoding Setup page doesn't come up at all.)
  • Streaming Protocol: Select the protocol that the Input 1 stream uses.

The default RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol).

The RTP option (Real-Time Transport Protocol).

  • Encoder Mode: When Streaming Protocol is set to RTMP, this indicator shows which handshake behavior the encoder that delivers a stream to Input 1 uses.

With the RTMP Push indicator, the encoder pushes the content to input 1.

With the RTMP Pull indicator, the encoder relies on Input 1 to pull the input stream.

  • Secured: This option appears when the Encoder Mode is RTMP Pull. If the encoder requires authentication, check this box, and complete the Username and Password fields that appear below it.
  • Input Name Versioning: When enabled, this setting guarantees that using multiple encoders at different times for the same channel won't cause ingest breaking. The default is not enabled.
  • Input Path: This setting appears when Encoder Input Profile is set to Elemental Input Profile w/ Failover (Non Ad).Enter the path of non-ad failover stream.

Packaging Setup

During the Create New Channel process, on the General Setup page, setting Packaging Partner to Ooyala Package, and clicking Next Step displays the Packaging Setup page.
  • Channel Type: Select the type of channel:

Adhoc runs for a finite period.

    24/7 runs continuously.

Slates

Ooyala Live includes slates that can display images or video when the live stream is not available. Slates can be encoded, and the stream in the outbound stream or the playback device can switch the user’s video window to display the slate. You can also have an alternate stream that is shown in case there are technical issues or, for example, the game has stopped and you would like to provide an alternate video.

When your Ooyala Live account is onboarded, you can configure your profiles to include a hot backup for primary input. With such configuration, if you lose your network input, Live will automatically play your slate until your primary input is stable, at which time time it will automatically switch back. You can also manually switch to any other slate.

To upload a slate, click the Slates icon located at the upper right portion of your screen.

A dialog appears allowing you to upload the desired file.

You can then manage your input and slates on the channel Test Page.

Your activity feed will help you confirm your latest actions.
