Impact of Exclusive Campaign on Ad Selection

Setting a campaign's mode to exclusive, means that you want it to fill all requested ad positions exclusively from the available ads in the campaign, when that campaign is selected by the distribution engine. As a consequence, exclusive and non-exclusive campaigns are mutually exclusive, which means that all requested ads in a session are either filled from one exclusive campaign, or all from non-exclusive campaigns.

Aspects in Pulse to Consider

There are two aspects of the Pulse ad serving environment to consider:

  • All integration SDKs, plugins and ad players work with sessions to ensure clash protection, goal sequencing (storytelling) and frequency capping. This means that all desired ad positions are requested simultaneously just before content playback. The desired ad positions are either specified in the integration, or provided through the insertion policies set in Pulse.
  • The distribution engine selects campaigns, goals and ads for the different ad positions in the following order of ad position:
    1. pre-rolls
    2. mid-rolls
    3. seek-rolls (only available for Flash Ad Player integrations)
    4. pause ads
    5. post-rolls
    6. overlays
    7. skin ads (only available for Flash Ad Player integrations)

Using sessions and the order of ad position fulfilment implies that as soon as the first ad is selected, all other ads and ad positions requested in a session are either filled from one exclusive campaign, or all from non-exclusive campaigns.

Examples

A non-exclusive campaign is selected first

For example, when requesting pre-rolls and mid-rolls, and a non-exclusive campaign is selected for the first ad in the pre-roll break, then all other pre-roll ads and all mid-roll ads are also selected from non-exclusive campaigns. Any exclusive campaign is automatically discarded by the distribution engine after the first ad was selected.

An exclusive campaign is selected first

In the other case, when requesting pre-rolls and mid-rolls, and an exclusive campaign is selected for the first ad in the pre-roll break, then all other pre-roll ads and mid-roll ads also need to be selected from the same exclusive campaign.

If there are less ads or no ads available in the selected exclusive campaign for a requested ad break or position, then those positions are not filled. Exclusive campaigns may cause wasted inventory.
